
Carl joined the Department of Teaching and Learning at Virginia Tech ( http://www.tandl.vt.edu) as an assistant professor in fall 2001. Before moving to Blacksburg, Carl taught at the University of Virginia, where he also earned his BA/MT (1991) and PhD (2001). While at UVa, he served as the assistant director for the Young Writers Workshop ( http://www.people.virginia.edu/~eds-yww) for two years and the Associate Director for one year. He also assisted in the Poet-in-the-Schools Program in the Harrisonburg City Schools, deejayed at the University's radio station, WTJU 91.1 FM ( http://wtju.radio.virginia.edu/), and volunteered for the Virginia Film Festival (http://vafilm.com/).
After receiving his BA/MT, Carl taught high school English in Staunton, Virginia, and middle school language arts, reading, and social studies in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He also coached football and softball at the high school level.
Carl's research interests include technology applications for English educators, inquiry-based learning, state and national standards, and teacher education. He co-authored a section in Milner et al.'s Developing Teachers: Fifth Year Programs for Outstanding Students (2001, University Press of America, Inc.) and has given presentations at several conferences including NCTE, JCT, and 4 C's.
