Carol Stuessy, Science Co-Editor

Carol Stuessy is an associate professor in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Culture at Texas A&M University. Dr. Stuessy teaches both elementary and secondary undergraduate teacher preparation courses, specializing in science education and integrated mathematics and science. She teaches graduate courses in curriculum, science education, and research design and has served as the chair of ten doctoral dissertations and three masters' theses.
She currently serves as the Associate Director of Classroom Assessment for the NSF-sponsored Center for Information Technology in Science and as co-director of the Texas A&M University Center for Science and Mathematics. Since 1988, Dr. Stuessy has served as an educational consultant and/or director in over 50 national, university, state, and local projects involved in some aspect of educational reform.
Carol is a native Texan who lived in Columbus, Ohio, for 23 years before returning to Texas in 1989. She taught high school and middle school science before earning her Ph.D at The Ohio State University in 1984. She has written 33 publications and scholarly works appearing as books, book chapters, refereed journal articles, and curriculum and training materials. Her current research centers on characterizing exemplary science learning environments. In that regard, she has developed a classroom observation system that visually represents the dynamic nature of learning and teaching interactions and the cognitive complexity of students' reception and performance within classroom contexts. Carol serves on the board of directors for the Association for the Education of Teachers in Science and for the School Science and Mathematics Association.
Carol is married to an atmospheric research scientist, David H. Dickson. Between them they share five children and four grandchildren. Her hobbies are botanical illustration, quilting, and playing the piano.
