Social Studies Methods
Course at the University of Alabama

Vivian H. Wright and Elizabeth Wilson

The Historical Fieldtrip of Alabama Landmarks project in the secondary social studies methods block at the University of Alabama requires preservice teachers to produce "Historical Fieldtrips." Developing this project allows the preservice teachers to learn digital editing; thus they are learning an important technology skill while learning specific content. Using video streaming technologies, the videos are also streamed for Alabama teachers to access and integrate into their social studies curriculum.

Technology Tools Introduced That Engage K-12 Students

Digital Video Cameras and MovieMaker 2 editing software – to create Historical field trips.

Preservice teachers can check out Technology on Wheels bundles, consisting of a laptop and projector for classroom use.

The Historical Field Trip project resulted from a need in Alabama to expand accessibility to Alabama history resources. In the current K-12 Course of Study in Alabama, Alabama History is no longer taught as a separate course at the secondary level. Subsequently, secondary social studies teachers are expected to integrate Alabama’s history throughout the social studies curriculum. Developing this project allows the preservice teachers to learn digital editing; thus they are learning an important technology skill while learning specific content. Using video streaming technologies, the videos are also streamed for Alabama teachers to access and integrate into their social studies curriculum. Videos range from stories of the civil war to spotlights of Alabama’s historical landmarks.

Tools Introduced That Help Preservice Teachers Create Teaching Materials

In addition to digital video cameras and editing software, all social studies students are required to research and produce a WebQuest and lesson plans integrating resources and tools (such as Alabama Virtual Library, online rubric makers, and MarcoPolo).

Course Assignments Using Technology
  • Electronic portfolio development includes posting assignments, instructional material, resumes and other artifacts
  • Creating a database of historical websites
  • Historical fieldtrips – preservice teachers research, video-tape, and digitally edit (are required to add music, titles, voice narration, and transitions) historical documentaries which are later streamed and used in classrooms throughout Alabama*

How Instruction Integrating Technology Is Modeled
  • Instructor created WebQuests
  • Videos of other projects
  • PowerPoint to start classroom discussions
  • All technologies associated with electronic portfolio requirements are also routinely used by instructor (e.g. database, PowerPoint, videos, online resources)
